More About Me

I am a videographer, photographer, and climate scientist with a deep passion for the outdoors, adventure, and conservation. My studies and curiosity about nature, people, and culture have taken me to places all around the world, from the Tien Shan Mountains in Kyrgyzstan to Prydz Bay in Antarctica. Filming, storytelling, and taking pictures are my ways of sharing this privilege and fascination with others. Combining aesthetics with knowledge, and adventure with science, is my vision for education through art and curiosity.

Growing up in Hamburg, Germany, I always had a strong connection to the sea. With part of my family living in the Austrian Alps, I also spent a lot of time in the mountains skiing, hiking, and mountain biking. After moving to Kiel to study physical oceanography and meteorology, I started kitesurfing and occasionally went sailing, while also making climbing and mountaineering my biggest hobbies.

In early 2018, during my studies, I began working as a freelance videographer and photographer. I produced content for artists, including music videos, electronic press kits, and show trailers, and branched out into product videos, advertisements, image videos, and social media content.

Over the past few years, I had the opportunity to join multiple research cruises to Antarctica and the tropical Atlantic, covering more than 10,000 nautical miles and spending six months on ships. I have also completed the Basic Safety Training STCW 78 as amended, including Security Related Training.

Back in Kiel, I worked as a student assistant for both the University of Kiel and the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research, contributing to projects such as the European University of the Seas SEA-EU and the UN Ocean Decade Programme DITTO.

While my study focus was on physical oceanography and climate physics, I also studied meteorology and geophysics, learned Python, Matlab, and R, and gained insights into renewable energies, sustainability, the carbon cycle, marine law, and data analysis. During a semester abroad at the University of Tasmania and the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies, I studied conservation, restoration, and Antarctic governance.

To combine my scientific knowledge and understanding of research with my visual communication skills in videography and photography, I found my place in science communication. I expanded my understanding of this field practically on my research expeditions, producing outreach videos, social media content, and pictures for press releases and blogs, and academically during a science communication workshop at the University of Malta.

From one of my research expeditions to Antarctica, I brought back a very special picture: the Tilted Iceberg

This image went viral, igniting the imagination of thousands and raising interesting questions about the processes behind this phenomenon. Climate Visuals, the world’s only evidence-based program for climate change photography, showed interest, leading to its publication on their platform and consequently by The Guardian and The Times. It was also featured in a number of exhibitions around the world.

Recently, I released a photo book about Antarctica, conveying my enthusiasm and fascination for this unique place on our planet.

In the future, I would like to continue documenting, sharing, and educating through my work.
